Kaitiakitanga - Guardianship of the environment that supports our culture

Our thanks to a team led by Andy Kohiti and his whanau who carried out extensive painting and carving restoration at Murumurunga Marae including the Wharenui - Wharepakau, the Wharekai and the Kohunga Reo fence in 2003. It now looks great.

Now the team is working on the Wharenui - Hine Nui te Po on Waikotikoti Marae .

Good work Kohu - a student from our Kura. Many other young people are helping and learning .

There is a lot of detailed work to be restored and preserved

Andy explains that it is necessary to scrape through the layers of paint to determine what the original colour scheme was. The painted carvings inside indicate that for this whare different faces of each carving were highlighted in different colours. He says our tipuna spent a long time doing this very carefully, so we must again follow their example ourselves.

Outcomes expected:

Our tipuna whare will remain available to inspire and guide many future generations in our valley.
Our people will grow a love for our whare and marae and welcome visitors regularly.
We will develop new skills
