7.1.0 Project Details:

WEMZ - Whirinaki Ecological Management Zone (DOC)

The WEMZ core area consists of 1000 hectares of intensively managed podacarp forest nestled within the Whirinaki Forest Park. Since 2004 intensive pest management throughout this area targeting possums, rats, stoats and ferrets has seen an increase in bird and insect numbers.

The WEMZ logo was a student project at our School. The image used was this one by Kohu Kohiti

WEMZ entrance rainforest

The entrance at the top of Fort Road opens up a magnificent world for visitors.

This is the start of the H tree track - graded to make it accessible for the elderly or people in wheelchairs

For the young and fit it is the start of the 18km mountainbike track in pristine rainforest

H tree

The H tree is one of the special attractions in this area. Very seldom do species like this join above the ground

forest floor mushrooms

Beneath the tall trees we find a magnificent forest floor full of the diversity of life

Milling Signs

We see evidence of a great Totara tree taken in the past .. and natures way of replacing it with the new

fungi recyclers pest traps

Building and maintaining the track is done in ways that minimize damage. Nature helps us with its fungi recyclers. With our mycorestoration project we in Whirinaki are learning how we can use the forests invisible mycelium underground pipeline network to help save not just our forest, but also our world.

The whole area is is subject to intensive pest trapping, control and monitoring by DOC. Some of our community members are directly involved with this in the WENZ.

Many local people hunt deer, pigs for food and trap possums for their fur in the surrounding Whirinaki areas. This reduces migration into this the Ecological Zone.

Many native bird and other species again finding a new home here. See how our native species recovery projects in Whirinaki are helping their populations grow . See Kiwi, Robin, Kaka, Weka, Blue Duck, Falcon
