3.9.2 Upgrade Sewerage in Minginui - Project Details:

Description:

Currently all homes are serviced using septic tanks of 1948 vintage. There outfalls leach into the small streambed that passes through the village and on to our Whirinaki River. Also, since the current water supply reticulation system has been in place since 1948, pipes are rusted and leaking with a subsequent health risk of cross pollution.

After many submissions to government, the establishment of an officials group in Wellington tasked to look at the issues of Minginui and a report on the village, this issue remains unresolved as of April 2007

We have started doing some research on this ourselves and have made some contacts with people able to advise us on environmental friendly solutions that are aligned with tangata whenua values and minimise risks to our waterways and health. These include:

• A report by Kipa Morgan, a Maori Civil Engineering Lecturer at the University of Auckland Engineering School who wrote an excellent report " A Tangata Whenua Perspective on Sustainability using the Mauri Model" which includes a section on human waste and better ways of preventing it from entering our waterways. • Members of our network met John Todd www.toddecological.com at the Sustainable Resouces Conference in Colorado 2004. He has been doing some groundbreaking work on natural biological ways of processing human waste and purifying waterways.
• At the same conference we connected with Paul Stamets www.fungi.com and this resulted in Randal Stensness from Hokianga Harbourcare attending a Mushroom Cultivation Seminar in March 2007. This leads to bioremidiation of toxicity and filtering using fungi. As a result of Randal's connections we hope Paul will visit New Zealand soon.
• Others from Environment BOP and elsewhere who have researched and developed high tech clustered septic tank and other systems appropriate for small communities. www.envbop.govt.nz/media/pdf/OSETDefinitionBibliography.pdf
