6.5.2 Affordable Housing - Project Details: (Raglan)

Description:

In 2004 Sandy Bishop and Rhea Miler from Lopez Island in Washington State attended a Tipu Ake Retreat and were later visted by Earl, Claud and James from our community and Randal from Hokianga who saw their affordable housing projects. Theirs is an island where the land is being bought by the rich and famous with the result that ordinary people like teachers and tradesmen can no longer afford properties there. They have set up a Community Housing Trust to build and provide an alternative.

In March 2007 Nancy de Vaux who runs the Housing Trust an from the next door San Juan island was NZ, so we were able to have her visit Te Whaiti 21st March and Raglan 22-March for public meetings to share their experiences.

It seems that in Minginui Village, since the land itself is already owed by the Ngati Whare Trust, a framework may already be in place that could help protect the residents from external market demand that could tempt community members to sell up their houses.

The meeting in Raglan found that the situation there was moving in the same direction as did Lopez, so a group has been formed to investigate options for countering the escalation in house / land prices. John Lawson of the Whaingaroa Environment Centre is coordinating that and a workshop is planned for 8fth July. On 9th May Malibu Hamilton from Raglan sent out an invite to other members of the Kaitiakianga Network welcoming them to that.

A DVD filmed at at the meeting at Raglan together with a DVD from the Lopez Housing Trust is available at the Kokiri Centre Minginui and Environment Centre in Raglan, Hokianga Harbourcare, and the Taonga Tuku Iho Trust in Ruatoria.
