6.11.1. Papakainga Project (Matekuare Whanau)

Description:

An innovative program funded locally by this whanau with support from Community Max schemes in 2010 and 2011

A comprehensive whanau driven project to get back onto our land and build capability for the future.

A wide range of activities and new skills are involved

Restoration of the old Presbyterian Mission Station is one of our projects

Establishing gardens and a native nursery adjacent to our Kura

This facility adjacent to our kura (school) may take over previously proposed Kaitiakitanga Program nursery
in the compound in Minginui. This did not go ahead for political reasons surrounding the NZTE Enterprise
Development Skills Development program application. That was approved, but later withdrawn when that agency

This is all done under our Communty Max scheme funding which terminates early in 2011, so innovatrive ways need
to be found to fund this ongoing project. We have previously submitted MFE Sustainable Management Fund applications
to try to support this ongoing initiative, but without success.

Young people with new enterprise skills and resilience for the future
Springboard to other new initiatives

Less dependence on external resources
Treasuring the Whenua (Land)
