5.7.1 Maori Experiential Network - Project Details

Description:

On the Tipu Ake / Kaitiakitanga Retreat 19-21 Mar 2004, participants decided to form a network to link whanau and iwi groups in different parts of the country that could provide unique Maori learning, ecotourism and sustainability experiences. The aim was not to attract conventional tourism traffic, but instead specific people from all parts of the world that want to experience local life and learn much more about the Maori world view, culture, wisdom, nature and their deep relationship with the earth and all life it supports.

1. The Te Hikutu people of the Hokianga Harbour in Northland.

The landing place of explorer Kupe and others - very much the cradle of civilisation in Aotearoa - the home of his descendents who live around it and are now involved in a harbour cleanup project. Contact Will or Randall Stensness Ph +64 9 405-8415.or fax +64 7 378-0929 State Highway 12, Whirinaki, Hokianga, Northland for Whirinaki Tours Kayaking and touring.

2. The Ngati Whare people of Te Whaiti Nui-a-Toi and the Whirinaki Forest

A place once populated by the multitudes of Toi, another great explorer and leader. We their descendents still remain here and invite you to stay on our marae and share your mind.. Contact the Marae Committee Pene Olsen Ph 64 7 3663335, or Andy or Jenny Kohiti Ph 64 7 366 3023 Visit the Whirinaki website

3. The Waitaha people of the South Island

The people of the very early nations of Aotearoa whose descendents share their story in the Song of Waitaha, - The history of the Waitaha Nation – New Zealand’s early peoples. ISBN 0-9583378, Publisher Ngatapuwai Trust, c/o McBrearty and Associates, PO Box 35-036, Shirley, Christchurch, NZ. ( Reprinted 2003 and again available – admin@mcbrearty.co.nz ). Contact Peter and Makere Ruka Te Korako

Outcomes expected:

  • Maori world view and values like Kaitiakitanga will be shared internationally
  • Visitors will get a wide learning experience not available through conventional tourist channels ( for many this will be an intellectual and personal challenge much more difficult than physical activities like bungy jumping)
  • We and our children will learn from our visitors ( a potential resource for our schools)
  • Visitors will participate in our environmental Kaitiakitanga projects ( eg planting trees)
  • We will share each others publicity, web exposure and potential visitors

Start Date: 25/03/04
Expected Completion:
Ongoing

Budget: NIL just some effort to put a composite webpage and information up on the Whirinaki site.
