3.2.4a Present at Project Management Institute Global Forum.

Description:

Our Tipu Ake paper "Vision Verbs and Viagra - Potent New Program Management Tools for a World of Complexity" (see details) was presented at the PMI Global Forum Anaheim California, on 26th October 2004. PMI is the leading world organisation for Project Management. Unfortunately we did not have the funding to send the other Te Whaiti person we would have liked to co-present it. (This conference followed a presentation earlier in the month at the Sustainable Resources Conference in Boulder Colorado, see report)

The paper we presented has been enhanced slightly and is now published on the Tipu Ake Website http://www.tipuake.org.nz/stories/program_management.pdf

Report and reflections by Peter Goldsbury:

This was a large conference attended by some 2500 practicing Project Managers from the US and elsewhere. It had many streams of papers presented mainly by people working in the industry. Naturally there was a big trade display with many software tools . Click here to see the full programme and the individual area of focus papers (where we presented)

This paper challenged some conventional PM linear thinking, so as expected participant feedback varied from:

"This was the best session I attended at 2004 PIMI. I am OD’d on process and ingenuity. I need the effective vs. efficient. Absolutely will follow up on the web site"
"Very interesting, non-traditional approach. I understand if others did not like it. Not everyone is ready/likes non-conforming approaches. I really enjoyed. It is thought provoking. Thank you".
"Greatly appreciated. Refreshing innovative session. Stimulates thinking."

" Had difficulty understanding the speaker at times".
" I attended this for advanced PM information - this did not provide advanced information."
"Very interesting sounding title I feel guilty for claiming 1.25 PDUs for this session. The speaker’s message was lost on me. I arrived a couple minutes late and kept waiting to see more evidence I was in the right session. I never saw any link to the session description for PMP 09.
"

See the full participant evaluation report.

It was encouraging to observe that most of the new team / leadership tools that people presented at the conference are ones that have been part or our workshops www.projectmanagement.co.nz for some years now.

It was interesting to note that the Project Management Institute (PMI) as an Organisation is now focusing very much on Leadership and in fact the suggestion was made that perhaps the institution should be renamed PLI to reflect this. On the other hand, most of the papers presented at the conference were still focused on the traditional tools for Project Management, so I reflected that in fact "Managing Things" and "Leading People" are two dimensions both of which need to be in present and in balance for effective projects.

I was particularly interested in a paper presented by Janice Thomas of Athabasca University in Canada " Surfing on the Edge of Chaos - Developing the Master Project Manager" which was at the same time as our paper so I could not attend it. It was the only other paper that really concentrated on the capabilities project managers need to for leading projects in a world of complexity. Her research on current project management educational programme indicated that; "Out of some 1200 providers researched ...only 13 (1%) touch on issues like complexity theory, multicultural sustainable development, regular updating and capitalization of knowledge, learning in uncertain unstable contexts, sharing knowledge through collaborative tools, new ways of thinking, new approaches - and thus get close to the what we have described as the requirements of increasingly complex project environments on project and management education"

It was therefore very encouraging to find that Tipu Ake leadership thinking from New Zealand www.tipuake.org.nz is very close to the leading edge and to have some 150 +people attend our workshop. Following the conference we saw a new peak in web hits now running at around 1000 downloads of the model per month from many countries in the world.

In conclusion, I found this to be very worthwhile conference to attend and present at. My sincere thanks go to Jacqueline Kardon in particular for helping us with the remote arrangements and the whole of the PMI conference team for their efforts in putting such a good event together.

Outcomes expected:

  • The community will share its leadership and organisational transformation model, enhancing its international position.
  • New Zealand and Maori and particularly Ngati Whare will be seen for the special contribution they are making
  • The presenters will develop new skills and confidence for presenting in such forums in the future
  • Feedback will allow us to further refine our Tipu Ake and Kaitiakitanga Program models
  • Tipu Ake will be recognised as a new model and a tool for community development

Start Date: 26th Oct 2004
Expected Completion:

Budget: (Note Peter Goldsbury will be covering his own costs)

Nominal Project Leader: Peter Goldsbury

Project Team: One other local co presenter with strong Tipu Ake knowledge was to be selected if funds found.
