3.2.3c Redesigning Our Future - Public Youth Forums"Growing a new industrial economy that respects life by mimicking nature".Description: Our Kaitiakitanga network was involved in a fast track project to take advantage of the presence of some high impact international speakers who were brought to New Zealand by Better by Design for their CEO Summit held in Auckland on 1st Sept 2008.(Video downloadble for this). A public youth forum was held on 30th Aug at AUT in Auckland (Video below) A. Michael Braungart - The Cradle to Cradle design guru from Germany in a dialogue with Kiwi Youth and Maori. Michael Braungart profile
Michael is a pioneer of Cradle to Cradle thinking - designing products, infrastructure and systems that at the end of their life become the nutrients to create new things - eliminating waste. He explains about returning the biological nutrients to the consumption cycle and separately returning / locking technical nutrients to the service cycle. He moves our thinking from beyond just "Doing less of the bad things", to "Doing more of the good things". He partners with green architect Bill McDonough in a organisation called "McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry" This event was hosted by NEXUS the University of Auckland Student Sustainability Group and held in an AUT venue on Sat 30th August. Michael was welcomed to Aotearoa with a Powhiri (formal Maori welcome) by SPIES - South Pacific Indigenous Engineering Students. Te Kipa Kepa Morgan, Associate Dean Maori, Faculty of Engineering, University of Auckland explained the ceremony and went on to highlight some key Maori concepts and practices around Sustainability; particularly Kaitiakitanga, Mauri and timeframes. This set the scene for Michael's presentation (COMING see www.nexusnz.org for a full report). A diverse panel of young people from local Universities, INTERSECT the young professionals group , Enviroschools were on stage with Michael to reflect and question. A good crowd of people stayed on with Michael for a further (third) entrancing hour to reflect on how NZ could become a cradle to cradle nation. Thank you Michael for what you shared!!! Much more information at www.braungart.com The event was put on using a Living Sytems Thinking approach where a whole range of organisations including TRANSITION TOWNS worked together to get 150+ attendees to a very positive event in just 4 days from start to finish. The Kaitiakitanga Team commited to video this and produce a DVD for distribution by NEXUS as well putting it on the web at DOWNLOAD THE 45 Min SUMMARY VIDEO OF THIS here (67 Mb) - DVD available from Nexus for $20 DOWNLOAD VIDEO OF HIS PRESENTATION AT THE BETTER BY DESIGN CEO SUMMIT here We had hoped to have senior students from Te Whaiti Kura at this event which conveniently followed on from the University of Auckland Careers Open Day in the morning, but a staff health problem and a funeral prevented that. B.Alex Steffen from worldchanging.com Alex Steffen profileAlex, the founder and executive editor of worldchanging.com participated at the Digital Earth Conference in San Francisco in 2007. Craig Neilson who met him there, hosted him in NZ and arranged for him to repeat the presentation he did at the CEO Summit at for the public and youth at the University of Auckland on 3rd Sept. worldchanging.com "Five years ago, on October 1, we launched Worldchanging as a venue to find, discuss and imagine the world's most innovative solutions to the planet's most pressing problems. Since then, we've found a great and diverse global community of readers, won prizes and awards, put out a best-selling book" and much more. Check out the wide range of resources on this site/ DOWNLOAD THE VIDEO OF THIS here
We hoped that two other keynote speakers at the CEO Summit could do public forums with youth but unfortunately their schedules did not allow that. They were Ray Anderson, Chairman of Interface Carpets (one of the world's most sustainable industries) and Janine Benyus (Promoter of Biomimicry). Their presenttions are in the Better by Design Media Library See also video from a series of youth forums with Hunter Lovins in 2006 Outcomes expected: Many more Kiwis and communities will have access to international information and therefore will be able to support New Zealand's progress as a Cradle to Cradle nation. Budget: This was done by volunteers on a zero budget. Thanks to Michael, Alex, Better by Design, AUT, The University of Auckland and many others for their koha (contributions), that made these events possible.
