1.4.0 Performance/Drama/Arts/ Film Skills Growth Project Details:
DEFERRED SORRY - Drama Workshop by Albert Belz and friends, Te Whaiti 12-15 July 2010 details
Thanks to Network Murupara for the Maori Film Festival 12-13 June 2010 - Programme and details here |
Description: This project is about helping our talented tamariki further enhance their skills in the Kapahaka / Dance / Drama / Arts / Film / Performance area. The America's Cup Kapahaka performance opened the another whole school production possibility which could depict their long history and ancient scientific and other wisdom, but has now branched into other areas.
America's Cup:
All viewers were inspired by our pupils performing Kapahaka so confidently for Team New Zealand and the America's Cup public and media in Feb 2003. Thanks to Tourism Auckland for getting us up to to help " Gee up" team New Zealand when they were four races down.

School production:
The idea was reinforced when our students surprised the itinerant drama teacher by writing their own script for our whole school drama production "The Abandoned Child" in July 2003

A local production possibilty:
Some FIRST CUT research for a local production depicting our history and story has been done downloadable here
It is a bit of a sequel to Awhi Tapu a play about Minginui by Albert Belz (who lived for five years in Minginui as a child - see below) The production could be launched on the marae and then later maybe repeated at a public venue in Auckland or Wellington
as part of the fringe festival.
We have heard of a small village in Germany that performs a passion play involving half the community every 10 years. It brings in people from around the world and has helped make Oberammergau a famous place to visit.
Contacted Witi Ihimaera who has whakpapa connections to Te Whaiti re the possibility of his book Sky Dancer being made into a film in Whirinaki
Awhi Tapu:
In 2003 a vanload of kaumatua and rangatahi were invited to Auckland for the premier performance of Awhi Tapu by Taki Rua Productions in the Auckland Festival. That is set in Minginui and involves a Quest up the Whirinaki.
Playwright Albert Belz spent 5 years in Minginui as a child. This is what people have since said about this play when it was performed again in 2009.
What a great year Centrepoint Theatre has been having! And we are very excited about bringing you our next show, Awhi Tapu. This fast, funny and moving piece delves into issues faced by young people today and the effects that change has on a small community.
Awhi Tapu heralds a new wave of writing around Mâori issues and characters. "Awhi Tapu is about reconciliation, it's about overcoming great loss to discover all that really matters are those who we love most," says playwright Albert Belz. A week into rehearsals and Maaka comments that the play "deals with some heavy material and constantly switches between humour and pathos at quite an energetic pace".
Awhi Tapu is set in the Ureweras. In their depths lies a small forestry village on the brink of destruction. Yet from ashes of carnage emerges a world of Technicolor silver-screen glory, as Wendyl, Sonny, Casper and Girl Girl visualise the big budget Hollywood blockbuster film of their lives (starring Denzel Washington). There will be music, lots of laughter and probably a few tears.

DEFERRED SORRY - Maori Youth Drama Wananga 12-15 July, Te Whaiti
Local experimential drama workshop and performance with Tamariki, Te Whaiti-Minginui

Albert Belz has kindly offered to bring some friends to put something special together with our youth, possibly seeded by his play Awhi Tapu about Minginui and Whirinaki. This is s part of the Community's School Holiday programme to help grow some creative kapahaka, dance, drama, film, performance arts and related skills, July 12-15 2010
This is being run by the Community and thanks to Kura BOT Support will use the excellent facilities including the Gym at the Te Whaiti School site where our tutors will also be accommodated.
All community people including the wider whanau are invited to participate in this ... Who knows where this opportunity might lead.
This will involve three days where Albert and his team will run a workshop with our Rangatahi and Tamariki. This is likely to result in a public performance of their work at 7.00pm on Wednesday 14th July. All are welcome. It's been a long time since we had a "concert" in our valley

Albert will probably have with him two other actors Scott Cotter and Tainui Tukiwaho, both of whom are fluent in Te Reo and very experienced young performers in drama, film, television (including Shortland Street), kapahaka, break dance, kick boxing, stunt fighting, circus, singing and more.
It is possible that Jenni Heka, Maori and Pacific Islands Playwright Development Coordinator for Playmarket, will also join them. They will be assisted by Lisa Bates a past producer of Shortland Street and now the Development Manager for Q Theatre a new performing arts centre being built in Auckland that caters for alternative / emerging works and actors.
This will be a fun event so watch this space for more details as they fall into place. Download the introductory panui / flyer
Get the message around your whanau and have them contact Karrie at Minginui Whanau Support ph 07 366 3040 asap to confirm their interest and get on the list for this amazing opportunity for more of our young people to grow and shine - Ahakoa he iti, he pounamu

Some community concerns raised about the understanding of the proposed workshop programme and some other activity clashes and commitments with key people. The time was not right, so the workshop is deferred to give time to ensure that the roots firm up around this opportunity so when it pops its head out of the ground no storms can blow it down. We want all to support it and our tamariki / community to really benefit from it. |
